Surgical bypass and artery reconstructions

Sometimes an operation is the best way of treating a diseased blood vessel, rather than a keyhole method like balloon angioplasty.  If the blockage involves a long length of the artery, or if important branches are clogged up, surgery can be more effective at producing a long term cure.

Arterial surgery is complex and there is a multitude of different techniques for bypassing or reconstructing abnormal blood vessels: various examples are shown here.

Femoro-popliteal bypass (W.L. Gore graft)

Vascular reconstruction (W.L. Gore)

Aortoiliac reconstruction (W.L. Gore graft)
